#16: Hattie (Schlatter) Madson (Age 17) is pictured here in the summer of 1911. She & a family cow are posing on what has been called "Madrona Point", after a huge madrona tree on the family's land on Holly Bay. Hattie's parents, Rudolph & Emelia Schlatter, bought 1300 feet of waterfront at Holly Bay's southern tip in 1908. Hattie, about 14 years old when her family settled here, finished school in Holly. She moved away but returned in 1925 with own children. In 1980, Hattie bought & moved into a home in Bremerton near her daughter Ruth Hawkins. Then, in December 1996, she moved into Forest Ridge Health & Rehabilitation Center where she resides today. At the time of this historical photo project (Fall 1997) Hattie is 103 years old. Her friendly, outgoing nature & positive, upbeat spirit make her delightful company at community events she still attends. Hattie has an impressive recall of Holly's pioneers & early events & places. She volunteered her time & offered photographs from the family albums for this project. We are deeply grateful for her significant contribution. Photograph donated Hattie Madson & Ruth Hawkins.
